Samsung Splits the Z Fold Line With a Wider, Lighter Base Model
The new Z Fold 8 trades telephoto reach for a passport-shaped form factor that feels more like a tablet and less like a stretched phone.

A Fork in the Foldable Road
For the first time since launching its book-style foldable series, Samsung has introduced two distinct versions of the Galaxy Z Fold. The company's eighth-generation device arrives in both an Ultra configuration and a redesigned base model that departs sharply from the tall, narrow proportions that have characterized the line since 2019.
The more compelling of the two is the standard Z Fold 8, priced at $1,900. Rather than iterating on the existing form factor, Samsung has reimagined the device around wider aspect ratios on both screens. The outer display now measures 5.5 inches with a 10:16 ratio, while the interior panel spans 7.6 inches in a 4:3 configuration. The result resembles a passport more than a phone, a shift that appears influenced by earlier experiments from competitors and anticipates rumored moves by Apple.
This represents Samsung's clearest acknowledgment yet that the stretched-phone paradigm has limitations. Over the past three product cycles, the company leaned heavily into multitasking narratives to justify increasingly narrow cover screens. The new base model suggests a different priority: making the device feel less like a compromised phone and more like a coherent dual-screen tool.
The Case for Width
The practical difference between a 4:3 internal display and the Ultra's nearly square 1.1:1 panel might seem marginal on paper. In use, the gap is more pronounced. Video content on the base Z Fold 8 exhibits noticeably less letterboxing, delivering more usable screen real estate for media consumption. Two-app multitasking remains perfectly viable on the 7.6-inch panel, while the broader cover screen handles quick interactions without the cramped feeling that plagued earlier Z Fold devices.
Samsung has effectively created a foldable that doesn't constantly push users toward opening it. The outer display now functions as a genuine primary interface rather than a stopgap on the way to the main event.
Weight reduction accompanies the dimensional shift. At 201 grams, the base Z Fold 8 is the lightest device Samsung has ever produced in this category, despite measuring 9.7mm thick when folded. The Ultra, by contrast, weighs 215 grams and measures 8.9mm. Both devices share an aluminum frame, IP48 ingress protection, side-mounted fingerprint authentication, and peak brightness of 3,000 nits.
Structural Refinements and Trade-Offs
Samsung has introduced a flexible titanium alloy that works in tandem with the existing titanium backing plate to reinforce the display hinge assembly. The company claims this layered approach reduces air gaps and minimizes crease visibility. A shallow indentation remains detectable under direct examination, but it recedes during typical use.
The base model's cost reduction required specific compromises. The rear camera array drops from three sensors to two: a 50-megapixel main module and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide. The telephoto lens is absent, a decision that will matter more to some users than others. The main display is smaller than the Ultra's 8-inch panel, and battery capacity sits at 4,800mAh compared to the Ultra's 5,000mAh. Still, that figure represents an improvement over last year's 4,400mAh cell.
Beyond those cuts, the base Z Fold 8 matches its more expensive sibling in most respects. Both devices run the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor, support up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, and offer 8K video recording. Wired charging now reaches 45 watts, with wireless charging topping out at 20 watts. Samsung has not integrated magnetic rings for full Qi 2 compliance, instead labeling the device "Qi 2 ready" and relying on first-party cases with embedded magnets to enable MagSafe-style attachment.
Hinge Behavior and Use Cases
One quirk of the base model involves its hinge mechanism. The springs inside prevent the device from holding a 90-degree angle in tabletop mode; it will naturally close itself when bent halfway. Users who prop their phones up for hands-free video viewing will need to adopt tent mode instead, which achieves a similar result with a different orientation. It's a minor constraint, but one that reflects the engineering choices Samsung made to achieve the device's lighter weight and revised form factor.
The Z Fold 8 launches in four colorways: lavender, cream, graphite, and pistachio, the last of which is exclusive to Samsung's direct sales channel. Pre-orders opened in late July, with retail availability set for early August.
What the Split Signals
Samsung's decision to bifurcate its flagship foldable line suggests the company is testing two hypotheses simultaneously. The Ultra caters to users who prioritize maximum screen size, camera versatility, and spec-sheet dominance. The base model targets a broader audience that may have found previous Z Fold devices too narrow, too heavy, or too expensive.
The $200 gap between the two versions is narrower than the feature delta might suggest, especially given current memory pricing. Samsung appears willing to absorb some margin compression to establish the base Z Fold 8 as a more accessible entry point into the foldable category.
What remains unclear is whether Samsung will converge these two paths in future generations or continue to maintain parallel tracks. The base model's form factor feels more considered for everyday use, while the Ultra leans into the "more is more" philosophy that has driven premium Android hardware for the past decade. An ideal device might blend the base model's wider aspect ratios with the Ultra's 8-inch display and three-camera array, but Samsung has chosen to make users pick.
For now, the base Galaxy Z Fold 8 represents the more interesting bet. It acknowledges that foldable phones need to justify their complexity with tangible usability gains, not just larger numbers. Whether the market rewards that restraint will determine how Samsung approaches the ninth generation.
