Samsung Chooses Qualcomm Over Its Own Chip in Galaxy Watch 9
The new smartwatch swaps Exynos for Snapdragon Wear Elite while keeping the same sensors, design and display as last year, raising questions about the $30 price increase.

The Platform Shift
Samsung has made a processor platform decision that will define its smartwatch lineup for the foreseeable future. The Galaxy Watch 9, launching August 7 with pre-orders open now, replaces the company's in-house Exynos silicon with Qualcomm's Snapdragon Wear Elite chipset. Built on a 3nm process, the Snapdragon Wear Elite was unveiled earlier this year and promises faster general performance alongside dedicated horsepower for on-device AI workloads.

The move suggests Samsung believes Qualcomm's roadmap for wearable processors now offers advantages it can't match internally, at least in the near term. Whether those advantages translate into perceptible speed gains or longer-term software support remains to be tested in real-world use.
The new watch ships with Wear OS 7 and One UI Watch 9, both fresh releases that should bring interface refinements and smoother navigation. But the rest of the spec sheet reads like a copy-paste job. The Watch 9 retains 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, identical to its predecessor, and the sensor array hasn't changed at all.
Same Body, Fractionally Heavier
Samsung is sticking with the "squircle" form factor that debuted last year: a square aluminum case with a circular Super AMOLED display. The Watch 9 comes in 40mm and 44mm sizes, with dimensions that match the Watch 8 down to the millimeter. The 40mm case measures 42.7 x 40.4 x 8.6mm, while the 44mm version sits at 46.0 x 43.7 x 8.6mm.
Weight has crept up slightly. The 40mm model now weighs 31.5g, up from 30.0g, and the 44mm version rises to 34.0g from 33.7g. The difference is negligible in practice, unlikely to register even if you wear both models back to back.
Display specs are unchanged. The 40mm watch features a 1.34-inch screen, while the 44mm version offers 1.47 inches, both capable of hitting 3,000 nits peak brightness for outdoor readability. Durability remains IP68 and 5ATM, sufficient for sweat, rain and shallow water exposure.
Color options see a minor refresh. The 40mm Watch 9 will be available in Cream and Graphite, while the 44mm version comes in Graphite and Silver. Cream is the new addition; last year's palette skewed darker.
Battery Gains, But Not Across the Board
Battery capacity has increased, though the improvement is size-dependent. The 40mm model now packs a 390mAh cell, a meaningful jump from the Watch 8's 325mAh. The 44mm version moves to 449mAh, but that's only a 14mAh gain over last year's 435mAh.
According to Samsung, users can expect roughly 30 hours of runtime with the Always-On Display enabled. In practical terms, that means making it through a full day and into the next morning before needing to recharge. Heavy use involving workout tracking, voice queries to Google Gemini and continuous heart-rate monitoring will still require daily charging.
Charging speed remains steady. The 40mm model reaches 100 percent in approximately 80 minutes, with a 30-minute charge delivering 50 percent capacity. The 44mm version takes around 90 minutes for a full charge, and a 30-minute session brings it to 45 percent. These figures are nearly identical to the Watch 8, so anyone hoping for a leap in charging efficiency will be disappointed.
The Sensor Suite Stands Still
The Galaxy Watch 9 carries over the full sensor array from last year without additions. That includes Samsung's BioActive Sensor, which combines an optical bio-signal sensor, electrical heart signal measurement and bioelectrical impedance analysis. Also present are a temperature sensor, accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, geomagnetic sensor and ambient light sensor.
Functionally, this means the Watch 9 can measure blood pressure, detect sleep apnea and provide bedtime guidance, all capabilities already present in the Watch 8. There are no new health metrics, no upgraded optical hardware and no additional diagnostic features. For users hoping Samsung would push deeper into continuous glucose monitoring or more advanced biometric tracking, this generation offers nothing new.
Google Gemini remains integrated for voice-based queries, allowing users to request directions, set reminders and compose text replies. The experience should be smoother thanks to the Snapdragon processor and Wear OS 7, but the underlying feature set is unchanged.
Pricing and the Value Calculus
Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch 9 will start at $380 for the Bluetooth model and $430 for the LTE variant. That represents a $30 increase over the Watch 8's launch prices of $349 and $399, respectively.
The price hike is modest, but it comes at a time when the Watch 8 is already seeing steep discounts. The 40mm Bluetooth version has dropped as low as $220 on third-party retail platforms, a significant markdown that makes last year's model look increasingly attractive. These deals tend to evaporate once inventory dries up, so timing matters if you're considering the older generation.
The question facing potential buyers is straightforward: does the Snapdragon Wear Elite processor, combined with Wear OS 7 and a slightly larger battery in the 40mm model, justify the $30 premium over a discounted Watch 8? The answer depends heavily on how much you value the promise of faster performance and longer software support. Qualcomm's chipset is newer and built on a more advanced process node, which theoretically translates to better efficiency and more headroom for future AI features. But without hands-on testing, it's difficult to say whether those benefits will be perceptible in daily use.
The Incremental Refresh Strategy
Samsung's approach with the Watch 9 reflects a broader trend in consumer wearables: iterative updates focused on internal improvements rather than dramatic feature expansion. The company has opted to refine the platform rather than reinvent it, betting that a more efficient processor and modest battery gains will be enough to sustain interest.
For existing Watch 8 owners, there's little reason to upgrade. The design, display, sensors and core feature set remain identical, and the performance delta between Exynos and Snapdragon Wear Elite is unlikely to transform the user experience in ways that matter day to day.
For new buyers, the calculus is more nuanced. If you're entering the Samsung smartwatch ecosystem for the first time, the Watch 9 offers the latest silicon and the longest runway for software updates. But if value is the priority, waiting for the Watch 8 to hit clearance pricing may deliver better bang for the buck, especially if you're willing to accept slightly shorter battery life and an older processor.
The real test will come in the weeks following launch, when independent reviews can quantify the Snapdragon Wear Elite's real-world performance and battery efficiency. Until then, the Galaxy Watch 9 remains a competent but cautious update, one that improves the foundation without expanding the structure built on top of it.
