Meta Exits Global Renewable Pledge After Gas-Plant Spree

A Quiet Departure From the Clean-Energy Club
Meta no longer belongs to RE100, the global corporate renewable energy initiative overseen by the UK-based Climate Group. The company joined the coalition in 2016, pledging to source all its electricity from renewable sources by 2020. A decade later, it has left the group entirely.
The reason is straightforward: Meta has invested heavily in natural gas infrastructure to fuel its expanding AI operations, and those investments now conflict with the technical criteria required for RE100 membership. According to Climate Group, Meta "is no longer able to meet the technical criteria due to investments made in new gas power." The organization counts more than 400 corporate members, including Microsoft, Google, and Apple, all of which have committed to 100 percent renewable electricity targets.
Meta confirmed the exit was a "mutual" decision but maintained it remains committed to "100 percent clean and renewable energy." The gap between that statement and the company's infrastructure choices, however, is widening.
Ten Plants in Twelve Months
Since last year, Meta has committed to ten natural gas power plants. Seven of those deals were announced earlier this year alone. The combined output of these facilities is sufficient to power an entire U.S. state the size of South Dakota, a scale that underscores the energy appetite of modern AI training and inference workloads.
Natural gas remains a fossil fuel. While it burns cleaner than coal, it still produces carbon emissions and methane leakage during extraction and transport. For a company that once set a 2020 deadline for full renewable sourcing, the pivot represents a significant recalibration of priorities.

Other tech giants remain in RE100, but they face similar pressures. Microsoft has acknowledged that its emissions have risen due to data center expansion. Google has struggled to meet its 24/7 carbon-free energy goal in certain regions. Apple has invested heavily in renewable supply chains but still relies on offsets for portions of its footprint.
The tension between AI growth and climate commitments is not unique to Meta. But Meta's exit from RE100 may be the first high-profile acknowledgment that, for now, the infrastructure demands of AI are winning that internal debate.
