Tidal cut off monetization for such content, effectively rendering uploads economically pointless for those chasing royalty payments. Apple Music introduced a voluntary tagging system that relies on uploader honesty, a mechanism that has predictably low compliance when financial incentives point the other way. Spotify, meanwhile, crafted a policy that attempts to parse the degree of AI involvement, distinguishing between tracks that use generative models for melody versus those that employ AI only for mastering or mixing.

Deezer's latest intervention sits somewhere in the middle: the company will remove AI-generated tracks that have recorded zero streams over the preceding six months or that exhibit patterns consistent with artificial-streaming fraud, bots and click farms designed to inflate play counts and siphon royalty pools. Deezer's six-month inactivity threshold is designed to prune the long tail of abandoned or never-played uploads, reducing storage overhead and cleaning the catalog. The anti-fraud clause targets the more lucrative schemes. Together, the measures acknowledge that synthetic music is not inherently illegitimate but that the current incentive structure invites abuse at industrial scale.

The Asia Angle: Parallel Dynamics in Short Video and Gaming

Observers in Seoul, Singapore, and Shenzhen will recognize the pattern. TikTok and its regional clones have grappled with AI-generated avatars and voice-over content that game recommendation algorithms; live-streaming platforms in China have battled synthetic hosts that run twenty-four-hour loops with minimal human oversight; and mobile-game studios across Southeast Asia have seen bot-driven install fraud erode user-acquisition budgets. In each case, the platform's openness, the feature that enabled rapid growth, became a vulnerability once automation costs fell below the revenue threshold.

Music streaming is simply the latest domain to hit that tipping point. The difference is that music carries cultural weight and a century-old rights infrastructure, making the policy response more visible and more contentious than, say, a flood of auto-generated casual games.

What Comes Next

Deezer's disclosure sets a benchmark. If 50 percent is the new baseline, rival platforms will face pressure to publish their own figures or risk the perception that they are ignoring the issue. Spotify, with over 600 million users and a vastly larger upload queue, likely sees similar or higher synthetic shares; Apple Music's voluntary tagging means the company may not even know its true proportion.

Regulation is beginning to stir. The European Union's AI Act includes provisions for labeling synthetic content, and several member states are exploring levy structures that would redirect royalty flows away from demonstrably fraudulent streams. In the United States, the debate has centered on copyright, with the Suno and Udio lawsuits serving as test cases for whether training on copyrighted works constitutes fair use.

For now, the music industry is improvising. Deezer's detection tools, Bandcamp's ban, Tidal's monetization cutoff, and Spotify's hybrid policy represent four different bets on where the equilibrium will settle. None has demonstrated clear superiority, and all will evolve as generative models improve and as legal precedent accumulates. The one certainty is that the 90,000 daily uploads Deezer logged in June will not be the peak; the curve has not yet bent.
